Second Timothy is traditionally attributed to the Apostle Paul, written during his final imprisonment in Rome around 67 AD. He writes to Timothy, a young pastor, providing guidance in a time when false teachings and heresies were threatening early Christian communities.

The Pharisaic distortion: Dismissing any unfamiliar teaching as "irreverent babble" without honestly engaging with it, using this verse as a shortcut to avoid difficult theological questions.

But shun empty chatter, for it will go further in ungodliness, and those words will consume like gangrene, of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; men who have erred concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past, and overthrowing the faith of some.
