To a defeated people tempted to hate their conquerors, Baruch commands prayer for the captor-king's life and days — a startling call to seek the good of Babylon rather than its ruin.

And pray ye for the life of Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon, and for the life of Balthasar his son, that their days may be upon earth as the days of heaven:

Pray for the rulers set over you — even the king who holds you captive — that God would grant them length of days and peace under his ordering.
