Mark opens his gospel not with a birth story, but with a command. Before the King arrives, the road must be built. Spoken by Isaiah/Malachi (Prophetic Voice) to Israel (and all believers).

The Pharisaic distortion: Smoothing the road of ritual while leaving the boulders of pride.

As it is written in the prophets, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you: the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord! Make his paths straight!’”
