A widow was in debt. She had nothing but a jar of oil. Elisha told her to borrow empty jars from neighbours and pour her little bit of oil into them.

She was desperate. The miracle required her active participation (borrowing jars). Torah connection: Deuteronomy 28:8 (Blessing in storehouses). The Pharisaic distortion: Limiting the Holy One of Israel.

Then he said, “Go, borrow empty containers from of all your neighbors. Don’t borrow just a few containers. Go in and shut the door on you and on your sons, and pour oil into all those containers; and set aside those which are full.”
