The Gibeonites used deception (old clothes, dry bread) to trick Israel into a treaty. The leaders trusted their eyes instead of asking God. Spoken by Narrator to Leaders of Israel.

Israel was flush with victory and confident. They assumed they knew who these people were. Torah connection: Numbers 27:21 (Urim and Thummim). The Pharisaic distortion: Pharisees judged by appearance (John 7:24).

The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from Yahweh’s mouth. Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The princes of the congregation swore to them.
