The enemy threatened to attack the wall builders. Nehemiah armed the people and gave this rallying cry: Don't fight for bricks; fight for your children.

They were tired and afraid. Nehemiah reframed the battle. Torah connection: Deuteronomy 20:3-4 (Let not your hearts faint). The Pharisaic distortion: Fighting theological battles while losing your kids.

I looked, and rose up, and said to the nobles, to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them! Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”
