Given by: Enoch, in his epistle of assurance, turning from comfort to warning. Given to: the righteous, guarded here against the sins that corrupted their oppressors.

Scribal cultures knew that whoever copies the words controls the community; altering 'the words of uprightness' was not an abstract sin but a live threat, alongside the perennial pull of household and marketplace idols.

Be not godless in your hearts, and lie not and alter not the words of uprightness, nor charge with lying the words of the Holy Great One, nor take account of your idols; for all your lying and all your godlessness issue not in righteousness but in great sin.

A five-fold charge of integrity: keep godlessness out of the heart, do not lie, do not alter the words of uprightness, do not accuse God's words of lying, and give no regard to idols — for lying and godlessness end only in great sin.
