Given by: the Lord, from the throne of the Great Glory, at the height of Enoch's heavenly vision. Given to: Enoch, addressed as 'righteous man and scribe of righteousness' before receiving his message for the Watchers.

In apocalyptic literature the seer regularly collapses before the divine glory and is regularly raised with 'fear not' — the pattern taught ancient readers that the true God, unlike the capricious gods of the nations, steadies those He calls.

And He answered and said to me, and I heard His voice: ‘Fear not, Enoch, thou righteous man and scribe of righteousness: approach hither and hear my voice.

The Lord steadies the trembling visionary with three commands in one breath: fear not, approach, and hear. God's presence is fearsome, yet His first word to His servant is reassurance and welcome.
