Ancient readers knew their trees intimately — fuel, shade, fruit and timber depended on them. The counted 'fourteen trees' that hold their leaves reflect careful folk observation pressed into theological service: even winter obeys an order.

Observe and see how (in the winter) all the trees seem as though they had withered and shed all their leaves, except fourteen trees, which do not lose their foliage but retain the old foliage from two to three years till the new comes.

Watch the trees in winter: most seem withered and bare, yet fourteen keep their foliage until the new comes — creation carries signs of endurance through barren seasons.
