Given by: Mahalalel, Enoch's grandfather, after waking the young Enoch from a terrifying dream-vision of the heavens collapsing and the earth swallowed in the abyss. Given to: Enoch, as the fitting response of 'a believer' to a revelation of coming destruction.

Written for communities under pressure who wondered whether God saw the world's violence; the Deluge story answered that He does judge — and Mahalalel's charge shows that the righteous respond to such knowledge by interceding, as household elders passed on both warning and prayer.

And now, my son, arise and make petition to the Lord of glory, since thou art a believer, that a remnant may remain on the earth, and that He may not destroy the whole earth.

When shown that judgement is coming on a sinful world, the believer's first duty is not despair but intercession: get up and plead with the Lord of glory that a remnant may be spared.
