Given by: Enoch, opening his second Dream-Vision — the long allegory of bulls, sheep and shepherds that traces the world's history. Given to: his son Methuselah, the appointed keeper of his father's testimony for the generations to come.

In the ancient world sacred knowledge lived or died by oral transmission from father to son; the formal double summons to hear echoes the schooling formulas of Israel's wisdom tradition — 'Hear, my son' — marking what follows as a sacred deposit.

And Enoch lifted up (his voice) and spake to his son Methuselah: ‘To thee, my son, will I speak: hear my words—incline thine ear to the dream-vision of thy father.

Before unfolding the great symbolic history of the world, Enoch charges his son to hear his words and incline his ear — God's testimony deserves deliberate, leaning-in attention, especially from child to parent.
