Given by: the souls of slain and suffering men, whose plea rises to Michael, Uriel, Raphael and Gabriel as they look down on the violence of the giants. Given to: the holy ones of heaven, who immediately take the cause to the Lord of the ages (9:4-11). A vision scene; the transferable duty is intercession.

In the ancient courtroom, the wronged needed an advocate to bring their suit before the king. The scene applies that legal picture to heaven: the archangels act as advocates, presenting humanity's case at the throne — a picture written for communities who felt their own cries went unheard.

And they said one to another: ‘The earth made without inhabitant cries the voice of their cryings up to the gates of heaven. And now to you, the holy ones of heaven, the souls of men make their suit, saying, “Bring our cause before the Most High.”’

The cry of a devastated earth reaches the gates of heaven, and suffering souls make one plea: bring our cause before the Most High. The four archangels take up the suit — the pattern of intercession for the oppressed.
