Given by: Enoch, among the opening woes of his epistle. Given to: the rich who trusted their riches — as warning to them, and as instruction to every reader whom prosperity tempts to forget God.

Deuteronomy 8 warned Israel that full houses and multiplied silver would tempt them to forget the Lord; the psalmists mocked those who trusted in the abundance of riches. In Enoch's day extreme wealth usually implied extraction from the poor, sharpening the woe's edge.

Woe to you, ye rich, for ye have trusted in your riches, And from your riches shall ye depart, Because ye have not remembered the Most High in the days of your riches.

A woe against the rich — not for possessing wealth, but for trusting it and forgetting the Most High in prosperous days; the riches will be left behind, and the trust misplaced in them with nothing to stand on.
