Given by: Enoch, in his epistle. Given to: the righteous who have suffered under the sinners — addressed directly and tenderly as sufferers.

For the epistle's first readers, suffering was not theoretical: economic oppression, violence and grief were daily bread. The promise of a 'voice of rest from heaven' spoke to bodies and hearts that had known little rest on earth.

Wherefore fear not, ye that have suffered; For healing shall be your portion, And a bright light shall enlighten you, And the voice of rest ye shall hear from heaven.

To those who have already suffered, a threefold promise dissolves fear: healing shall be their portion, a bright light shall enlighten them, and from heaven they shall hear the voice of rest.
