Given by: narrated of Judith as she prepared to go out for her people's deliverance. Given to: the reader, as an example that the heart's intent, not the outward act alone, is what God weighs.

The narrator pointedly guards Judith's honour, distinguishing her adornment from the sensuality of the seductress; her care for appearance served her people's deliverance and proceeded from virtue, and so drew God's blessing.

And the Lord also gave her more beauty: because all this dressing up did not proceed from sensuality, but from virtue: and therefore the Lord increased this her beauty, so that she appeared to all men's eyes incomparably lovely.

Let even outward preparation spring from virtue and pure intent rather than from sensuality.
