Victors commonly kept the arms and finery of a defeated foe as trophies of their own prowess; to devote them instead as an 'anathema' — a thing set apart to God — was to renounce personal glory and confess that the victory belonged to the Lord.

And Judith offered for an anathema of oblivion all the arms of Holofernes, which the people gave her, and the canopy that she had taken away out of his chamber.

Dedicate the spoils of your deliverance to God and keep no trophy for yourself, claiming no glory from the victory.
