Under siege and awaiting deliverance, the people were tempted to despair; the priest's word tied God's hearing to their steadfastness, framing perseverance itself as faith at work.

Saying: Know ye that the Lord will hear your prayers, if you continue with perseverance in fastings and prayers in the sight of the Lord.

Trust that the Lord hears, and so continue with perseverance in fasting and prayer, not fainting when the answer is not yet seen.
