Haircloth (sackcloth) and ashes were the recognised marks of mourning and repentance; that even those leading the sacrifices wore them signalled a whole people humbling itself before God.

So that even they who offered the holocausts to the Lord, offered the sacrifices to the Lord girded with haircloths, and with ashes upon their head.

Approach the worship of God in humility and penitence, letting a contrite and lowly heart mark the way you come before Him.
