Israel confessed the Lord as 'patient and of much mercy'; her prophets read national distress as a call to return with fasting and weeping, so Judith's counsel stands in that long tradition of penitential response to trouble.

But forasmuch as the Lord is patient, let us be penitent for this same thing, and with many tears let us beg his pardon:

Because the Lord is patient, meet trouble with penitence and tears, begging His pardon rather than His compliance.
