Israel's wisdom held that 'whom the Lord loveth he chastiseth', correcting His people as a father his son; Judith applies this, teaching that the scourges fall on servants for their amendment and are mercifully less than their sins deserve.

But esteeming these very punishments to be less than our sins deserve, let us believe that these scourges of the Lord, with which like servants we are chastised, have happened for our amendment, and not for our destruction.

Receive God's chastening as correction meant for your amendment, not your ruin, counting it less than your sins deserve.
