Given by: the angel of the presence to Moses on Sinai, retelling Abram's arrival at Shechem in Canaan. Given to: Israel through Moses, and to every wayfarer who follows Abram in faith.

In the ancient Near East an altar staked a claim; Jubilees turns the gesture inward, making Abram's altars acts of allegiance to the Lord rather than territorial markers, a witness to Jews under pressure to root themselves in worship.

And the Lord said to him: 'To thee and to thy seed will I give this land.' And he built an altar there, and he offered thereon a burnt sacrifice to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

Abram enters a new land and the first thing he does is build an altar and worship the God who met him there.
