Given by: the angel of the presence to Moses on Sinai, retelling the Lord's word to Abram in a dream. Given to: Israel through Moses, and to every believer haunted by fear or striving for lesser rewards.

A shield and spoils were the warrior's security and gain; the book has God claim both roles for Himself, teaching a people surrounded by stronger nations to find their safety and their treasure in Him.

After these things, in the fourth year of this week, on the new moon of the third month, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a dream, saying: 'Fear not, Abram; I am thy defender, and thy reward will be exceeding great.'

God speaks to Abram in a dream: 'Fear not; I am thy defender, and thy reward will be exceeding great' — He Himself is the believer's shield and prize.
