Carrion birds descending on a sacrifice were a familiar sight and a real threat to its purity; the book turns the image into a picture of the watchfulness faith must keep over holy things.

And birds came down upon the pieces, and Abram drove them away, and did not suffer the birds to touch them.

As birds descend on the sacrifice laid out for the covenant, Abram drives them off and lets nothing defile what he has set apart for God.
