Given by: the angel of the presence to Moses on Sinai, retelling the Lord's promise of countless seed and Abram's answering faith. Given to: Israel through Moses, and to every believer who would be right with God.

In a culture of visible offspring and measurable honour, staking one's whole future on an unseen promise was folly; the book holds up Abram's trust as the true wisdom, righteousness reckoned not earned.

And He brought him forth abroad, and said unto him: 'Look toward heaven and number the stars if thou art able to number them.' And he looked toward heaven, and beheld the stars. And He said unto him: 'So shall thy seed be.' And he believed in the Lord, and it was counted to him for righteousness.

Shown the countless stars, Abram simply believes God's impossible promise — and that faith is counted to him as righteousness.
