Given by: the angel of the presence to Moses on Sinai, retelling God Almighty's charge to Abram before the covenant sign is given. Given to: Israel through Moses, and to every believer who lives coram Deo, before the face of God.

To 'walk before' a king was to live under his constant gaze and favour; the book applies the image to God Almighty, calling Abram — and Israel — to a life ordered by the awareness of His presence.

And the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him: 'I am God Almighty; approve thyself before me and be thou perfect.

God Almighty appears and calls Abram to approve himself before Him and be perfect — to walk wholeheartedly and blamelessly in His sight.
