Surrounding nations practised child sacrifice as religion's ultimate price; Israel's story turns the institution on its head — God halts the knife, abhorring the sacrifice while honouring the surrender, and Himself provides the offering.

And I said unto him: 'Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything to him; for now I have shown that thou fearest the Lord, and hast not withheld thy son, thy first-born son, from me.'

Heaven stays Abraham's hand with a verdict: now it is shown that you fear the Lord — you have not withheld your son, your first-born son, from Me.
