Given by: Abraham to Isaac, walking together towards the mountain, when the boy asks where the lamb is — recounted by the angel of the presence to Moses on Sinai. Given to: a son carrying the wood of his own offering, and through him to every child who asks a parent the question they dread.

In the ancient world a father's word shaped a son's entire understanding of the gods; Abraham's answer taught Isaac — on the worst road of both their lives — that the God of their family provides rather than merely demands.

And he said, 'God will provide for himself a sheep for a burnt-offering, my son.' And he drew near to the place of the mount of God.

To his son's piercing question on the road to the mountain, Abraham answers with spoken faith: 'God will provide for himself a sheep for a burnt-offering, my son.'
