Ancient Near Eastern land deals were sealed publicly at the town gate, and an unpaid 'gift' left the giver with a lingering claim; by paying the full four hundred pieces of silver before witnesses, Abraham secured the burial place honestly and honoured the Hittites with his double bow.

And they besought him saying, We shall give it to thee for nothing; but he would not take it from their hands for nothing, for he gave the price of the place, the money in full, and he bowed down before them twice, and after this he buried his dead in the double cave.

Offered the burial field for nothing, Abraham insists on paying the full price and bows twice in honour — integrity and respect in a moment when he could have taken advantage.
