Given by: the angel of the presence, speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai according to the word of the Lord, at the opening of the book's retelling of Genesis. Given to: Moses, commanded to write — and through his writing, to every generation that reads.

For Jews pressed by Hellenistic culture to treat their customs as provincial, grounding the sabbath in creation itself declared that the seventh day is older than every empire and every fashion.

And the angel of the presence spake to Moses according to the word of the Lord, saying: Write the complete history of the creation, how in six days the Lord God finished all His works and all that He created, and kept Sabbath on the seventh day and hallowed it for all ages, and appointed it as a sign for all His works.

The angel commands Moses to record the whole history of creation — six days of divine work crowned by a hallowed seventh — so that sabbath rest stands for ever on the memory of what God has made.
