In the second century BC, calendar disputes divided the Jewish world — to follow the wrong reckoning was to keep God's feasts on man's dates. Jubilees answered by anchoring the calendar in creation itself, making the ordering of time an act of loyalty to the Creator.

And God appointed the sun to be a great sign on the earth for days and for sabbaths and for months and for feasts and for years and for sabbaths of years and for jubilees and for all seasons of the years.

God appointed the sun as a great sign to govern days, sabbaths, months, feasts and years — time itself is created order, given so that human life can be arranged around God's seasons.
