In the ancient Near East, sharing salt sealed lasting agreements, and 'a covenant of salt' meant an enduring bond; the law required salt on offerings, and Jubilees preserves it as a sign of unbroken fidelity.

And on all thy oblations thou shalt strew salt, and let not the salt of the covenant be lacking in all thy oblations before the Lord.

Abraham charges Isaac to strew salt on every offering — never to let the salt of the covenant be lacking in what is brought before the Lord.
