Covering spilt blood with dust and abstaining from it set Israel apart from surrounding practice; Jubilees heightens the reverence, teaching that blood carries the very soul and so belongs wholly to God.

And let no blood appear upon you nor upon your clothes; be on thy guard, my son, against blood, be on thy guard exceedingly; cover it with dust. And do not eat any blood for it is the soul; eat no blood whatever.

Abraham urges Isaac to guard exceedingly against blood — to cover it with dust and never to consume it, for the blood is the life itself.
