Written for Jews under intense Hellenistic pressure to assimilate, the book urges that shared meals and shared customs with idolaters would draw Israel into the very worship it must refuse; the separation is from practice, not from persons as such.

And do thou, my son Jacob, remember my words, And observe the commandments of Abraham, thy father: Separate thyself from the nations, And eat not with them: And do not according to their works, And become not their associate; For their works are unclean, And all their ways are a Pollution and an abomination and uncleanness.

Abraham charges Jacob to keep himself from the idolatrous practices of the nations — not to share their table nor imitate their unclean works.
