Given by: the angel of the presence to Moses on Sinai, recording how Isaac and Ishmael buried Abraham and mourned him. Given to: Moses, and through him to all who bury and grieve their own.

In the ancient Near East burial in the family tomb and an extended period of mourning were solemn duties; the gathering of Isaac, Ishmael and all the sons of Keturah shows a whole household uniting to honour its father.

And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the double cave, near Sarah his wife, and they wept for him forty days, all the men of his house, and Isaac and Ishmael, and all their sons, and all the sons of Keturah in their places; and the days of weeping for Abraham were ended.

Abraham's sons bury him beside his wife and weep for him forty days — honour paid to a father to the very end, in reverent burial and unhurried grief.
