In the covenant household a mother's will in the matter of marriage carried real authority; Jubilees shows the ideal son not chafing under it but embracing it as the path of uprightness itself.

Fear not, mother; be assured that I shall do thy will and walk in uprightness, and not corrupt my ways for ever.'

Jacob sets his mother's heart at rest with a double promise: he will do her will, and he will walk in uprightness, never corrupting his ways.
