In a largely oral culture, a grandfather's charge was carried by deliberate memory; Jubilees prizes this chain of remembered instruction as the thread on which Israel's identity hung under foreign pressure.

For I remember, mother, the words of Abraham, our father, for he commanded me not to take a wife of the daughters of Canaan, but to take me a wife from the seed of my father's house and from my kindred.

Jacob keeps Abraham's charge alive in his memory years after it was given: he remembers the words of his father's father and orders his life by them.
