Jubilees answers a Hellenistic world saturated with permissive cults and customs by holding up patriarchs who guarded the inner life; the 'many commands' of Abraham on purity reflect the book's conviction that holiness must be taught and tended.

And for this reason I have guarded myself in my spirit against sinning or being corrupted in all my ways throughout all the days of my life; for with regard to lust and fornication, Abraham, my father, gave me many commands.

Jacob testifies that he has guarded himself in his spirit against sinning or being corrupted — a lifelong inner watch, not a single decision.
