In Jacob's world an oath sworn before a parent was among the most binding acts a man could perform; Jubilees uses it to show covenant purity outlasting the most intimate and persistent pressure — a brother's, sustained for a generation.

I swear before thee, mother, that all the days of my life I will not take me a wife from the daughters of the seed of Canaan, and I will not act wickedly as my brother has done.

After twenty-two years of his brother's urging to marry as he had married, Jacob swears before his mother that he will never yield — resolve sealed with an oath.
