Bethel became one of Israel's most storied sanctuaries, and Jubilees preserves the moment of its consecration — an ordinary hillside made dreadful by presence, teaching readers that holiness attaches wherever God meets His people.

And Jacob awoke from his sleep, and said, 'Truly this place is the house of the Lord, and I knew it not.' And he was afraid and said: 'Dreadful is this place which is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.'

Waking from the dream, Jacob is afraid: this place is the house of God and the gate of heaven — reverent dread is his first response to God's nearness.
