Standing stones anointed with oil marked covenants and theophanies across the ancient Near East; Jacob's pillar claimed the site not for magic but for memory — the place where heaven's gate had opened over an ordinary traveller.

And Jacob arose early in the morning, and took the stone which he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar for a sign, and he poured oil upon the top of it. And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of the place was Luz at the first.

Rising early, Jacob sets up his stone pillow as a pillar, pours oil on it, and names the place Bethel — a permanent memorial of the night God met him.
