Given by: the angel of the presence, in an aside on the land of Gilead where giants once dwelt. Given to: Moses on Sinai — and through him, to every generation inclined to think itself too established to fall.

Gilead's massive ruins were credited to vanished giants, and Jubilees reads the landscape theologically: the mighty dead preach to the living. Judgement on nations belongs to God alone — the text records His act, and assigns no such role to men.

And the Lord destroyed them because of the evil of their deeds; for they were very malignant, and the Amorites dwelt in their stead, wicked and sinful, and there is no people to-day which has wrought to the full all their sins, and they have no longer length of life on the earth.

The book recalls the fate of the Rephaim and the Amorites after them: the Lord destroyed them because of the evil of their deeds, and persistent sin left them no length of life on the earth.
