Given by: the angel of the presence to Moses on Sinai, retelling Adam's first act of worship on the day he left Eden. Given to: Moses, and through him to Israel, as a pattern of worship that endures beyond loss.

Fragrant offerings of frankincense and spices were the language of reverent worship in the ancient Near East; the book has Adam offer them at dawn, marking worship as the first and fitting response to God even in exile.

And on that day on which Adam went forth from the Garden, he offered as a sweet savour an offering, frankincense, galbanum, and stacte, and spices in the morning with the rising of the sun from the day when he covered his shame.

On the very day he was expelled from Eden, Adam offers worship to God; faithful worship continues even after loss, failure and exile.
