Given by: the angel of the presence to Moses on Sinai, teaching that modesty is written on the heavenly tablets for those who know the law. Given to: Moses, and through him to Israel, distinguishing God's people by their reverent dignity.

Written amid Hellenistic culture where public nakedness in the gymnasium was celebrated, the book calls God's people to a distinct dignity of dress that set them apart from the surrounding nations.

And to Adam alone did He give (the wherewithal) to cover his shame, of all the beasts and cattle. On this account, it is prescribed on the heavenly tablets as touching all those who know the judgment of the law, that they should cover their shame, and should not uncover themselves as the Gentiles uncover themselves.

An enduring call to modesty: those who know God's judgment cover the body with dignity rather than exposing themselves as those without such knowledge do.
