Given by: the angel of the presence to Moses on Sinai, within the law drawn from Dinah's defilement. Given to: Moses for the children of Israel, as a warning of the utmost gravity.

Written when intermarriage with powerful pagan houses promised security and status, the book answers temptation with maximum severity: no passage of years and no gift could mend the betrayal of handing covenant children to idolatry.

And to this law there is no limit of days, and no remission, nor any atonement: but the man who has defiled his daughter shall be rooted out in the midst of all Israel, because he has given of his seed to Moloch, and wrought impiously so as to defile it.

The book's severest sentence, stated honestly: for handing a child of the covenant over to defilement it allows no time limit, no remission, no atonement — a measure of how seriously heaven regards purity.
