Given by: the angel of the presence to Moses, recounting how Jacob's household surrendered even the idols worn as jewellery, and how Jacob destroyed them all. Given to: Moses — a model of renunciation for all who follow.

Idols were valuable — precious metal, family property, legal tokens of inheritance; burning and burying them destroyed wealth as well as religion. Ancient hearers would have felt the cost that modern readers miss.

And they gave up the strange gods and that which was in their ears and which was on their necks and the idols which Rachel stole from Laban her father she gave wholly to Jacob. And he burnt and brake them to pieces and destroyed them, and hid them under an oak which is in the land of Shechem.

The household gives up its strange gods wholly, and Jacob burns them, breaks them to pieces, destroys them and hides them in the earth — renunciation without a keepsake.
