Given by: Jacob to his father Isaac, through the night at the house of Abraham. Given to: Isaac — whose answering blessing shows what testimony is for.

In an oral culture the family's history of God's dealings was its treasury, kept by telling; a night-long recital between father and son was how covenant memory passed intact between generations.

And Jacob told his father everything during the night, how the Lord had shown him great mercy, and how he had prospered (him in) all his ways, and protected him from all evil. And Isaac blessed the God of his father Abraham, who had not withdrawn his mercy and his righteousness from the sons of his servant Isaac.

Through the night Jacob recounts to his father how the Lord showed him mercy, prospered his ways and protected him from evil — and Isaac responds by blessing the God of Abraham.
