Ancient festivals were the community's memory made edible — deliverance rehearsed in shared meat, wine and song. Seven days of joy declared publicly that Jacob's God, not Jacob's luck, had brought him through.

And he and all his sons and his men were eating (this) with joy there during seven days and blessing and thanking the Lord, who had delivered him out of all his tribulation and had given him his vow.

Jacob, his sons and his men eat before the Lord for seven days with joy, blessing and thanking the God who delivered him out of all his tribulation.
