Given by: Jacob, answering Rebecca's dying charge. Given to: his mother — a son's glad acceptance, recorded by the angel of the presence as a model of how duty should be received.

In the ancient household a son's answer to a parent's charge was itself a public act; Jacob's reply does not negotiate terms but multiplies the charge into honour, greatness and righteousness — the language of a man receiving a gift.

And Jacob said: 'I will do everything as thou hast commanded me; for this thing will be honour and greatness to me, and righteousness before the Lord, that I should honour them.

Jacob receives his mother's charge with joy: honouring father and brother, he says, will be honour and greatness to me, and righteousness before the Lord.
