Given by: Esau, answering his dying mother's petition — a promise to love Jacob above all flesh. Given to: Rebecca — and preserved by the book as the plainest statement of brother-love in the patriarchs' story, from the brother with most cause for grievance.

Jubilees generally casts Esau darkly, which makes this speech the more striking: even he, at his mother's deathbed, can state the obligation perfectly — the book lets the least likely witness establish that brother-love is self-evident.

And Jacob, my brother, also, I shall love above all flesh; for I have not a brother in all the earth but him only: and this is no great merit for me if I love him; for he is my brother, and we were sown together in thy body, and together came we forth from thy womb, and if I do not love my brother, whom shall I love?

Esau's confession makes brother-love elemental: sown together, born together — loving him is no great merit, 'for he is my brother'; it is simply owed.
