Jacob had in fact been made first — his father's blessing set him higher, as Esau himself acknowledges; the vow's power is that the exalted brother renounces the enjoyment of precedence in everything but love, before the mother who once secured his advantage.

And he said: 'I shall do thy pleasure; believe me that no evil will proceed from me or from my sons against Esau, and I shall be first in naught save in love only.'

Jacob's vow before his dying mother: no evil shall proceed from me or my sons against Esau — 'and I shall be first in naught save in love only'.
